Happy Father's Day from Maley Designs!
We wanted to share a behind-the-scenes perspective on fatherhood through the eyes of our very own Neil Maley! He and his wife Whitney balance running Maley Designs full-time and parenting four young children. Being able to harmonize business and family is a challenge and a joy, and they wouldn't have it any other way.
For Neil, running his own business works far better than working for another company. There's no asking for permission to work less or work more, Neil says; he greatly values the flexibility to set his own hours so he can spend more time with the kids. He likes that his work is governed by what he can get accomplished in a day, not by what he is required to complete. On the other hand, Neil admits that it can be easy to get pulled into work mode all the time. He says the hardest part of being an entrepreneur father is finding stopping points and calling it quits when it's family time. It seems there's always something more to do!
Being a parent certainly brings personal change, as well. Neil has learned that fatherhood is far more than just being present. Each of his kids is different, and what works for one does not necessarily work for the next. He and Whitney are constantly adjusting and finding fresh ways to connect with and nurture each child individually. But, Neil wholeheartedly believes that his children are the most rewarding aspect of life. He finds great joy and gratification in seeing his children grow and learn. His business, though growing and successful as well, pales in comparison to his four kids.
Neil's favorite activities and best memories with his kids usually involve being outdoors. Backpacking and camping are among the Maleys' go-to weekend activities; together and outdoors is their favorite place to be. At home, whether its mowing the grass, gardening, or working on a new building project, helping Dad in the backyard makes for a fun Saturday for all. When the work is done, Neil enjoys leading science experiments (the best ones involving baking soda, vinegar, and lots of bubbles) and launching rockets in the backyard. No matter the activity, Neil loves leading his kids through hands-on projects and watching them discover new things about the world.
Are the Maley kids involved in helping out with Maley Designs? You bet! Neil shares that it's fun getting to see their interest in "helping" at the shop, even though they're all under the age of 7. They love handing package cards to whoever is working on orders, or cleaning up the parchment paper from the t-shirt printer after it's been used. Neil loves involving them in the family business and teaching about entrepreneurship at a young age.
If Neil had to choose a favorite design in our shop, he'd have to say its our "Dad's Rules" t-shirt. As a big project guy, Neil does love his tools, but as the father of two daughters, he's far more protective of them!
From the Maley Family and Maley Designs, Happy Father's Day!
Withing you a safe and celebratory day.
